Eric L. Davis, DSW, LCSW, LCAC
Executive Director & Co-Founder

Dr. Eric L. Davis provides therapy for adults seeking recovery from substance use and problem gambling, as well as those working to change patterns of abusive behavior. Many of the individuals he works with feel stuck in cycles they have tried to break, often multiple times, and are looking for a way to regain control, restore stability, and rebuild their lives with greater clarity and purpose.

With more than 25 years of experience in behavioral health, Dr. Davis is a psychotherapist, educator, and recognized leader in Indiana’s mental health and addiction treatment community. He is the Executive Director of Waypost Counseling in Indianapolis and serves as a faculty member at the Indiana University School of Social Work, where he contributes to the education and development of future behavioral health professionals.

Dr. Davis co-founded Life Recovery Center in 2004 and served as its Executive Director for twenty years until its acquisition by Mental Health America of Indiana in 2024. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively with individuals navigating substance use and gambling disorders, abusive behaviors, trauma, and complex life challenges. He has significant experience working with court-involved populations and individuals participating in certified domestic violence abuse intervention programs.

Dr. Davis approaches therapy with the belief that lasting change requires more than willpower alone. His work helps individuals understand both the biology of behavior—such as cravings, impulsivity, and reinforcement—and the deeper patterns, beliefs, and environments that sustain those behaviors over time. He integrates evidence-based clinical practice with insights from neuroscience, trauma research, and behavioral conditioning to help clients move beyond short-term control and toward meaningful, sustainable change. He views recovery not simply as stopping harmful behaviors, but as the reconstruction of identity, purpose, responsibility, and personal integrity.

He is known for a direct, thoughtful, and respectful therapeutic style. His work balances compassion with accountability, helping clients examine difficult patterns honestly while also supporting practical, forward movement. Clients often appreciate his ability to translate complex psychological concepts into clear, usable strategies that apply in everyday life, particularly in moments where decisions matter most.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Davis has served in numerous leadership roles within Indiana’s behavioral health community. He previously served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Mental Health America of Indiana and completed three terms as President of the Indiana Credentialing Association on Addiction and Drug Abuse (ICAADA), where he helped develop the Board-Certified in Problem Gambling (BCPG) credential, now recognized statewide.

He currently serves on the Boards of Directors for the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Indiana Council on Problem Gambling and was appointed by the Governor of Indiana to the Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Council.

Dr. Davis regularly provides consultation and professional training for courts, clinicians, and behavioral health organizations. He is the author of The Bible and Addiction Recovery and has served as a clinical expert for national and international media outlets including Fox, NBC, CBS, Sky News, USA Today, and The Indianapolis Star.

Outside of his clinical work, Dr. Davis is also a professional musician and writer. He believes that meaningful clinical work requires intellectual curiosity, humility, disciplined self-examination, and a lifelong commitment to personal growth. You can currently hear him each week on the Your Life Matters Show Podcast or learn more at DrEricLDavis.com.
